Chance Shelter volunteers worked very hard on our float for the Surprise Veteran’s day Parade. It took a total of just 3 days to create this fun filled and informative float. We wanted to showcase how important service dogs have been through the years to all of our service men. Through generations, starting in World War I, service men have relied on pets to help in so many ways. Whether it was on the front lines or even behind the scenes, they could always rely on their pets to get them through.
That’s why this Veteran’s Day we were honored to be involved in the Annual Surprise Veteran’s Day Parade. We want to thank the City of Surprise for having us in this years parade. We hope to return next year and continue to honor our four-legged heroes. Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who helped make this year a success!
For just a little history on how long pets have been helping our service men and women. We can go back to the original furry war hero, Sergeant Stubby. He was the first dog to be given rank in the armed forces. Stubby served in 17 battles in WWI. His keen sense of smell warned soldiers of incoming gas attacks and artillery. He assisted with locating downed soldiers and helped sniff out enemy spies.
Sergeant Stubby was just one of the many four-legged heroes known throughout history. For more on the history of war dogs visit:
