Jake greeting my husband, Greg as he came through the door, a day filled with happiness that means even more to me now. On September 10, 2024, my husband passed away. Jake was only two years old. 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱, 𝗜 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗮𝗸𝗲, 𝘁𝗼𝗼. He became increasingly protective of me and our home, almost as though he felt it was now his job to keep me safe.
Jake has come a long way, but he still struggles. When someone comes to our door, he barks, rushes toward them, and may jump on people he doesn’t know. On a leash, he reacts strongly to passing cars and other animals. Yet at the dog park, when he’s off leash, he is a completely different dog—
happy, social, and comfortable around both dogs and people. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗜 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗺.
Helping animals has always been an important part of our lives. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲, 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝘆 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵. I need to understand what Jake needs from me and learn how to help him feel safe without believing he has to protect me. That’s why the opportunity to work with Cesar would mean more than I can put into words. I don’t simply want to stop Jake from barking or reacting, I want to understand the reason behind his behavior and give him the confidence to live a happy, peaceful life. Jake has never bitten anyone, and I don’t want to wait until something happens to get him the help he deserves.

We’ve both had to learn how to live in a world without Greg, and Jake has been beside me through one of the hardest chapters of my life. I don’t know exactly what Jake feels or how much losing Greg affected him. What I do know is that I love him with all my heart, and I see the wonderful dog he can be when he feels safe.
